The Legend of "Midgetville"

For about the last decade of so, I've been obsessed with Little People, or what we all more commonly refer to as "Midgets" whic is far and away more PC than little people.....and yes I can say Midget cause I'm 5'6 and borderline myself.

Anyway - just picked up this cool book from Barnes and Noble called WEIRD PENNSYLVANIA and it's pretty cool! First thing I look up, yep - Midgetville and it has 3 pages dedicated to it. It turns out Midgetville is where everyone said it was - Ridley Townsip - duh!!!! According to myth, legend, and first hand accounts (including my sister who went there like 15 years ago) it does exist and the people are little, the houses are little, the doors on the houses are little, and the street signs are little. Imagine this, only 20 minutes from my house a whole town of fun and games!!!! I think I've finally found my calling in life and it is to mend the fences between the Little People of Ridley and the rest of Philadelphia. Supposedly, they throw rocks at you if you come and disturb them.

Stay tuned for Part II coming soon........

When are we going? I think I can get a map over at Handy smurf’s house. And Mark, you are getting a little carried away with your stories. Midgets do not throw rocks, they throw pebbles. Duh.

Mark - Your obsession is entirely strange and I know it stems from the talking-backwards midget from Twin Peaks. (I'll go if DeOrio agrees to go.) I went back in highschool but I think the midgets used the mind-eraser gadget on me and I can't remember where we turned off of Chester Pike.

The road to get to Midgetville, or as we called it, Midget Village, is across the street from Taylor Hospital on Chester Pike. My cousin and I were there about 30 years ago but were chased away by regular sized people. We did see it.

Me and my girlfriends are planing a trip to Midgetville. We live in the Bromall area...and since i was litte I've heard about this little town with little people. My dad has told me the story of how him and his friends visited it like 30 years ago...and i just wanted to make sure that it still exsisted today. Apparantly it a one way, no outlet road directly across from Taylor Hospital. What friends have told me it that if you see a big white house you've made it. But i just wanted to know if the street that the actual houses are on has a name. And do the midgets actually come out and throw things at you...just so we know who's car to take!

apartment in michigan

My wife grew up in Ridley and swore she had been chased out of there when she was a kid. I doubted her and made her take me there. We found the little "Hidden Village" she remembered from childhood and it seemed quite strange. Very tucked away with smaller than average houses that were extremely close together on a street that was barely wide enough for a vehicle. Turn onto Princeton Ave. across from Taylor Hospital off Chester Pike in Ridley, PA. Go past the apartments on your left and straight onto a small gravel road that looks like a driveway. There are no trespassing and video survellance warnings everywhere. After enter the gravel portion of the road turn right into what looks like a driveway ...continued....

continue past the house and follow the path to the left. It looks like you are driving into the persons back yard but it goes through to this very strange little development that was very strange but we did not see any midgets. My wife was swearing that all the doors and windows looked smaller than normal... but they all looked about the normal size to me. No one came out to chase us or yell at us, but there was an exaggerated amount of warning signs of all types. It did have an eerie feel to it as a whole. Make sure you are good at reversing as there is no room to do a 3 point or U-turn anywhere. Have fun on your search and say hi if you run into any of the natives.

My friends and I went Tonight. The houses we saw were all resindential. We were hoping to see another dirt path at the end of the driveway but nothing was there. After asking some locals we discovered that the houses were torn down recentaly. Also the village was never home to any migits, it was actually built for sailors after WW2. If your looking for an adventure don't waste your time with Migitville in Ridley PA.

I was there today! It is fully intact, and 110% as scary as anything you can imagine. We were walking around taking pictures when a 14yo kid came up on a bike and asked us what we were doing. Turns out he is the caretakers son, and I have to say he must have one of the most fucked up living situations ever. In exchange for being caretakers of the properties they get to live in the only 1 of 60 shacks from the early 1900's that has running water. He talked to us for a couple mins, said we could take some pics and we had to go in 20 mins. All i got out of him was that multiple buildings were being rented out as "only summer" homes due to the lack of water. Most of the buildings had been condemned, or were in need of major renovations via historical commissions. You couldn't pay me to stay the fuck in this place over night.

Normally I would say exactly how to get to a place like this but, I really felt bad for this kid. He was nice, and gave me the impression that a ton of people come there all hours of the night, vandalize break into buildings, and I'm sure scare the shit out of a kid that is already forced to live in a shitty religious commune.

I googled as much as I could about the place and found a religious association that has taken it over and created a very misleading and over glamorized website. I don't know what master of photography they have taking pics but absolutely nothing is nice or homely about this hell on earth.

OK, I know that this sounds crazy and that I could be lying, but I'm not. We drove to midgetville, PA when I was in high school, and yes, there are little houses and little people come out of them and are none too happy that you are on their road.
To get there, we took 95 south to essington, then go down to the right, follow the refrigeration factory signs to the right a couple times. you will then see a little sign called "flowertown" with arrows on it. follow these signs and it will take you to their villiage (yes, it is a dirt road). once there, you will see little shack houses that look like little green houses...maybe only 10-12 houses in total. like the earlier comment said, you cannot make a u turn on this road, so be prepared to back up. Good luck!

There's a little Midgetville off the Bartram Ave exit of 95. Going southbound take that exit, when you come to the big intersection at the bottom of the ramp, turn right down the dirt road that runs alongside the highway. You go past some factories or quarries or something and eventually make a right down another dirt path. there's even a little pay phone that's only about 2 feet off the ground. I stopped going because a pig the size of a small horse appeared in the middle of the road. I've never seen a pig so big. It was creepy.

Midget Ville in Ridley township PA. Was/is a small cul-de-sac of Tutor homes called "Stoney Brook" that was built in 1911 by a British Builder Norman Sloane to at the time "British Cottage" standards. Meaning basically things were smaller/lower.

Its still there only many of the dozen or so homes have been added on to with additions on additions making the original homes hard to identify.

There is one original home still left there on the corner, stone w/ red windows.

And in the late 60's early 70's There was a short guy who lived there named Willie, who was actually a nice old guy.

These stories are all very interesting. I too have a story of my own. Once upon a time sometime in the 1980s I went to work, I was employed by a home improvement contractor. My boss tells me while driving down the road that we were going to see someone about a leaking roof. So far it seemed like a typical day. We're going down Chester Pk, I see Taylor Hospital on the left and sure enough we made a right turn at that point. Down the road a ways we turned into what seemed like a small dirt driveway. We parked the truck and we were greeted by our contact person who by the way was not a little person. My boss proceeded to introduce himself and conduct his business. I myself had the run of the place and took a quick personal tour. My first assessment was that this place had been there a long time and was no longer being used. It accurd to me that it may have been built for children, perhaps an early daycare center. But on closer inspection it appeared that it was intended to
accomadate older people. So now I'm thinking, Munchkins? It was very interesting and I would have loved to see more, but did not have my camera and was there to work. So to the job at hand. At that time we were given our assignment. We were there to look at the roof of one of the buildings as we were told that it was leaking and that there hope was to evaluate and perhaps repair. So while the boss is talking I set up a ladder, went up on the roof, determined what was needed to make repairs. I then went back down on the ground, gave a report to my boss and gathered what I needed to do the job. A short time later he joined me on the roof and we proceeded to work on the damaged area. I have to say we did a good job. It was a good company and that's how we did things. When we were finished we packed up, said goodbye and I haven't returned since. I've never forgotten that day and finally checked it out on the Internet. Well it was a pleasent surprise to discover so much interest in this village. I now hope to see it on an aerial map. And if I see it my roof patch may still be their as proof of leaving my mark.

I went here once, on a sugar cube of acid. My buddy was crunched down in the front seat screaming "here they come, here they come!" I was laughing hysterically in the back admiring the tiny doorways on tiny houses. If you're gonna go to midgetville I highly recommend you do so on LSD
